Seascape at Satta in Suruga Province – Utagawa Hiroshige (1858)

A wall of white-capped waves, a calm bay, and Mount Fuji watching over it all. In Seascape at Satta in Suruga Province, Utagawa Hiroshige fills the foreground with breaking waves whose foam curls like fingers. Beyond them, the bay opens up to a snowy Mount Fuji, a pine-covered cliff on the left and a flock of birds crossing the sky.

The deep Prussian blue, the white foam and the soft pink sky give the print a crisp, graphic energy that fits as well in a modern interior as in a traditional one.

The print

The print belongs to Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji (Fuji sanjūrokkei), one of the last series designed by Hiroshige and published in 1858, the year of his death. Satta Pass, on the Tōkaidō road along Suruga Bay, was famous for its view of Fuji above the sea. Many see in these waves a tribute to Hokusai's Great Wave, published almost thirty years earlier.
