The old Paris that has vanished
At the end of a narrow street lined with leaning houses, the Gothic church of Saint-Séverin appears, while Parisians go about their day in the shadows. Thomas Shotter Boys published this plate in 1839 in an album of picturesque architecture that was a landmark in the history of colour lithography, one of the first to print full colour directly from stone. The medieval Paris he recorded here was largely swept away a few years later by Haussmann's great avenues, which gives these views a special poignancy.
A wonderful print for anyone who loves Paris, and a natural fit for a hallway, a study or a wall of city views.
