Still Life with Teapot and Fruit, Paul Gauguin

Mangoes, a blue teapot and a crumpled cloth, painted in Tahiti. On a table covered with a white cloth stand a blue and white teapot, a wooden spoon and a pile of ripe mangoes in red, green and orange. Behind them, a deep blue wall is scattered with large yellow flowers, and a terracotta vase adds a warm note. The whites of the cloth are full of blue and lilac shadows.

Gauguin admired Paul Cézanne’s still lifes and even owned one, which he refused to sell for years. This canvas echoes Cézanne’s crumpled tablecloths and solid fruit, but with the intense colours of the tropics.

Why it works on your wall

• Generous and colourful: a perfect painting for a kitchen or a dining room
• A Post-Impressionist still life: the meeting of Gauguin and Cézanne in one image
• Framing tip: a gold or natural wood frame warms its blues; it suits its landscape format well
