Tahiti in bold colour, under a red mountain. A path winds across a golden-green field towards a line of palm trees and bushes in vivid greens, yellows and violets. Behind them rises a mountain painted in deep red and purple, under a sky of drifting white clouds. A small figure walks along the path, almost swallowed up by the landscape.

Paul Gauguin painted this landscape in 1891, during his first months in Tahiti. Rather than copying nature, he simplified it into broad, flat areas of pure, almost unreal colour, to convey the dazzling intensity of the island.

Why it works on your wall

  • Bold and sunny: red, yellow, green and violet for a living room, an entrance or a dining room
  • An escape to the South Seas: the Tahiti of Gauguin, between reality and dream
  • Framing tip: a natural wood or gold frame enhances the warmth of the colours

The painting

Paul Gauguin (1848–1903), a key figure of Post-Impressionism, left Paris for Tahiti in 1891, seeking a simpler, “primitive” world. His bold colours and simplified forms had a lasting influence on modern art, from the Nabis to Matisse. Tahitian Landscape belongs to the Minneapolis Institute of Art.
