The end of an era, in a blaze of light

A pale, almost ghostly warship glides up the Thames, pulled by a small black steam tug, while the sun sets in a blaze of gold and red. The ship is HMS Temeraire, a hero of the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, on her way to be broken up in 1838. Turner turned this scene into a moving farewell to the age of sail as the age of steam took over. In 2005, the painting was voted Britain's greatest painting in a BBC radio poll, and it now appears on the Bank of England's £20 note.

Its golden light warms any room: this print shines above a sofa, in a dining room or in a study, and pairs beautifully with Turner's Rain, Steam and Speed, its natural sequel.
