From the summit of Mount Holyoke, the view opens onto a great loop of the Connecticut River. On the left, a thunderstorm moves away over dark, untamed forest and a shattered tree; on the right, sunlight falls on neat fields and farms. Painted in 1836 by Thomas Cole, founder of the Hudson River School, The Oxbow is the icon of American Romanticism and a meditation on the wild land giving way to cultivation. Look closely at the bottom of the canvas: Cole painted himself at his easel, turning back toward the viewer.
Vast, luminous and full of detail, this panoramic print is a perfect centerpiece above a sofa or a sideboard, especially in interiors with natural wood, greens and warm neutrals.
