Painted around 1790, this fantastical scene depicts Titania, Queen of the Fairies, enchanted by Oberon and hopelessly in love with Bottom, whose head has been transformed into that of an ass. Surrounded by an uncanny procession of fairies and fantastical creatures, the scene combines sensuality, darkness and theatrical imagination. Füssli was particularly fascinated by Shakespeare’s supernatural worlds, and this painting was commissioned by John Boydell for his celebrated Shakespeare Gallery.
