Triptych with Flowers and Birds – Ohara Koson

Three seasons of birds and flowers, side by side in one long panel. This triptych brings together three prints by Ohara Koson: green birds on a persimmon branch heavy with orange fruit, sparrows sheltering under yellow kerria flowers, and red poppies opening on slender stems. Each scene is simple and airy, and together they read like a single frieze.

Why it works on your wall

• A panoramic format: perfect above a sofa, a bed headboard or a long sideboard.
• Fresh, natural colours: soft greens, orange and red bring life to a calm, light interior.
• Framing tip: a thin black or natural oak frame keeps the Japanese spirit of the prints.

The artist

Ohara Koson (1877–1945) is one of the great masters of kachō-e, the Japanese tradition of bird-and-flower prints. Working in the early 20th century with publishers such as Watanabe Shōzaburō, he became a leading name of the shin-hanga movement, which renewed the woodblock print with softer colours and a closer observation of nature. Many of his prints were made for Western buyers, which explains why they sit so naturally in today's interiors.
