From the porch of the church of Santa Maria della Salute, the eye travels down the Grand Canal between rows of palaces, past gondolas sliding over bright, hazy water. Painted around 1835, a year after its companion piece, this view shows Turner loosening his brush: architecture begins to melt into pure light, decades before Monet worked in the same lagoon.
Fresh and full of air, this print lights up a living room, a dining room or an entrance hall. It forms a natural pair with Venice: The Dogana and San Giorgio Maggiore.
