A brown octopus spreads its eight arms across the page. Drawn with scientific precision, every sucker and fold of skin is visible, and the arms curl in loose, elegant spirals on a cream background.
Why it works on your wall
- Nautical and natural: ideal in a bathroom, a seaside house or a kitchen.
- Warm browns on cream: it suits wood, rope, linen and white walls.
- Framing tip: a natural oak or black frame; pair it with another cephalopod plate for a set.
The plate
This illustration comes from the Histoire naturelle générale et particulière des céphalopodes acétabulifères vivants et fossiles, a monumental study of octopuses, squids and cuttlefish begun by the French naturalist André de Férussac and completed by Alcide d'Orbigny. Its hand-coloured plates are still admired for their accuracy and beauty.
- Authors: André de Férussac (1786–1836) and Alcide d'Orbigny (1802–1857)
- Book: Histoire naturelle… des céphalopodes acétabulifères, from 1835
- Technique: hand-coloured engraving
