Goya's night of the witches

Under a pale crescent moon, a huge goat crowned with leaves (the Devil himself) presides over a circle of witches who hold out children to him, while bats flutter across the night sky. Goya painted this small canvas in 1797–1798 for the Duke and Duchess of Osuna, as part of a series of witchcraft scenes for their country house near Madrid. Far from celebrating the occult, Goya was mocking superstition and ignorance, the same targets as his famous Caprichos etchings published in 1799.

With its earthy palette and striking silhouette, this print brings an intriguing, slightly unsettling touch to a library, a study or a dark-academia interior.
