Yakumo Bridge at Nagata Shrine, Kobe – Kawase Hasui

Snow on a vermilion bridge: red and white, nothing more. Kawase Hasui shows the Yakumo bridge of Nagata Shrine covered in fresh snow, its red railings glowing under the white. Behind it, the shrine roofs and the trees disappear little by little into the falling snow.

Why it works on your wall

• A striking contrast: the vermilion stands out on a white or grey wall.
• A winter favourite: perfect for the festive season, and calm all year round.
• Framing tip: a thin black frame and a white mount let the red sing.

The print

Nagata Shrine is one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Kobe. Kawase Hasui (1883–1957), the leading landscape artist of the shin-hanga movement, is nicknamed the poet of rain and snow: few artists have drawn falling snow with such softness. He sketched his subjects on the spot, then worked with carvers and printers to translate them into woodblocks.
