The rain has just stopped on Kagurazaka, one of Tokyo's liveliest streets. Night has fallen, the shop windows and paper lanterns are glowing, and every light is doubled on the wet pavement in long, trembling reflections. A woman in a purple kimono walks past, while customers linger at a brightly lit stall piled with red and orange goods. Yoshida builds the whole scene from warm browns and amber light: a quiet, cinematic image of 1920s Tokyo, half modern city, half old Edo.

Yoshida made this print in 1929 for his series Twelve Scenes of Tokyo, alongside Kameido Bridge. The left margin carries the red jizuri seal ("self-printed"), the date, the series title and the title of the print in Japanese, while the bottom margin bears the pencil title "Kagurazaka Dori" and Yoshida's signature.

Japanese artist Hiroshi Yoshida (1876–1950) was a master of shin-hanga, the "new prints" movement that renewed the ukiyo-e tradition with Western light and perspective. His night scenes, where light becomes the true subject, are among his most admired works.
