The Moon on Musashi Plain (Musashino no Tsuki, むさしの月) is one of the most poetic prints in Tsukioka Yoshitoshi's celebrated series One Hundred Aspects of the Moon (Tsuki Hyakushi). Its colophon dates it to 1891–1892, at the very end of the artist's career.

A pale fox sits alone in the tall pampas grass, beneath an immense full moon. It turns to look back over its shoulder, and at the bottom of the print, its reflection appears faintly in the water, like a ghost of itself. The vast Musashi Plain, near today's Tokyo, was famous in classical Japanese poetry for its endless grasslands, so wide that the moon seemed to rise from the grass and set back into it. Yoshitoshi fills that silent autumn night with a presence that belongs to both worlds: a real fox, or a kitsune, the shape-shifting spirit of Japanese folklore?

About Tsukioka Yoshitoshi

Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839–1892) is often called the last great master of ukiyo-e. A pupil of Kuniyoshi, he lived through the upheavals of the Meiji era and brought a new psychological depth to Japanese woodblock prints. One Hundred Aspects of the Moon, completed shortly before his death, is widely regarded as his masterpiece: a hundred scenes of history, legend and the supernatural, all united by the light of the moon.
