The painting that changed how war is shown

At night, on a hill outside Madrid, a faceless row of French soldiers takes aim. Facing them, lit by a large lantern, a man in a white shirt throws his arms wide, like a martyr. Around him, some pray, others hide their faces, and the dead already lie in the dust. Painted in 1814, Goya's canvas recalls the executions that followed the Madrid uprising against Napoleon's troops in May 1808. Instead of heroes and glory, Goya shows fear and anonymous victims, and in doing so invented the modern image of war. Manet and Picasso both drew on it.

An intense, powerful work for a study, a library or a hallway, for those who want art that makes you stop and think. It complements Goya's darker, satirical Witches' Sabbath.
